DOOM MAGNETIC!!! - EPILOGUE:
KEEP YOUR ELECTRIC EYE ON ME
William Pauley III
Maundin walks along the edge of the earth, the smell of death and sea salt fills his nostrils. He steps over and between leaking bodies, leaving a trail of red footprints like dripping paint in the sand. The blood-soaked ground, the surrounding death, the sour stench of open neck wounds—none of this bothers him anymore.
He runs his hand along the wooden fence that separates the beach from the city, sliding his fingers down into the grooves, enjoying this rare moment of peace. A flitter of light reflects off the dew of a wet spider web, spun between two posts. It catches him in the eye. The spider hangs there lifeless, a corpse caught in its own trap.
Maundin kneels down and touches the web, plucking it like a guitar string. The spider bounces and swings in a sarcophagus, spun and erected by its own legs. After the vibrations settle, it just hangs there again. It’s been dead for months.
He takes off his Stetson and tosses it to the sand. He reaches for the spider and gently unfolds one of its legs, putting the end of it to his lips. He takes a deep breath and slowly blows air into it. It begins to twitch and spasm, blossoming like some strange, wicked flower, then quickly goes to work repairing its web, as if death hadn’t caused it to miss a single beat.
Maundin grabs his hat and places it atop his head.
As he looks out at the great blood-stained ocean, he wonders.
